Tae Kwon Do is a defensive martial art.  Although it is known for its aggressive offensive attacks, the practitioner is taught to never instigate a fight and to walk away whenever possible.  Those who practice Tae Kwon Do are taught to the five tenants of Tae Kwon Do (courtesy, modesty, perseverance, self-control, and indomitable spirit); principles intended to build character and promote a civilized society.
